Current KAYSC Teams

Cell Lab Crew
Lab Crew members guide museum visitors through the Cell Lab experiment bench activities in the museum’s Human Body Gallery, present science activities to children in community outreach programs, and work side by side with museum staff and volunteers to maintain the Cell Lab. Teens also help create new hands-on activities to teach cell biology and microbiology to museum visitors, children, and community partners.

Climate Change Crew
The Climate Change team is a group of freshman through seniors that researches the effects of climate change on a local scale.  Youth will connect with policy makers, lead presentations, and design projects to educate the public about climate change issues.

Design Teams A, B, and AB

The Design Teams represents the middle school component of the IDEA (Invention, Design, Engineering, and Art) Cooperative between the Science Museum of Minnesota, St. Paul Public Schools, and St. Paul College.  The Design Team’s emphasis is on positive and fun activities that attract the youth to IT and engineering.  They will participate in designing projects appealing to their creativity, preparing them for high school STEM classes.

Earth Buzz
Earth Buzz teens explore how we survive and thrive on a human dominated planet.  The team learns how human activities affect earth systems on a local and global scale.  They work together to identify ways to make museum visitors and others aware of their impacts on the earth as well as the innovations and solutions that will allow for a more secure future for us all

Invention Crews 1 & 2
The Invention Crews represent the high school component of the IDEA (Invention, Design, Engineering, and Art) Cooperative between the Science Museum of Minnesota, St. Paul Public Schools, and St. Paul College.  Invention Crews explore the areas of design and engineering by inventing and manufacturing solutions to problems in the community.  They use professional engineering tools to design and manufacture mechanical and electrical components for use in their solutions.

Mentor Buzz
The Mentor Buzz team helps connect mentors with youth through the Science Buzz mentoring website.  Teens collect current science topics to provide blog discussions to start important science conversations between youth and adults.  In addition, teens lead, prepare, and teach STEM activities at museum and community partner sites.

Park Crew
Park Crew teens assist museum visitors with exhibits and lead hands-on activities in the Big Back Yard during the summer.  During the school year, the team travels to after school programs throughout St. Paul to teach elementary students about watersheds, non-point source pollution, rivers and erosion, and dams through hands-on activities.

Podcast Crew
The Podcast Crew is composed of 6 juniors and seniors who will create 10 podcasts about the Disease Detectives exhibit.  The crew will research the technology behind podcasting, learn about interviewing techniques, and gain insights into science content relevant to microbiology and pathology.

Leadership Team
Youth who have exemplary leadership skills and thorough knowledge of the Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center are selected to serve on the Leadership Team in addition to their primary team.  These youth hone their leadership skills to provide the youth voice in the KAYSC Strategic Plan, help plan Youth-Wide events, and communicate the mission of the KAYSC to the larger Science Museum of Minnesota and beyond.
